After a fall sports season that evoked plenty of questions regarding the IHSA’s classifications in postseason events, a change is coming in how teams will be split up in the postseason.
At the IHSA Board of Directors meeting on Dec. 9, the board approved a recommendation to switch from a two-year State series classification cycle to a one-year cycle, beginning in the 2025-26 season.
This means that enrollment figures for each member high school, which are the basis for dividing teams into respective classes, will be updated each year instead of finding the average of schools’ enrollment figures over the course of two-year cycles.
“The IHSA Board of Directors has heard the concerns from the public, and more importantly, from our member schools in the days since the completion of the IHSA’s fall state tournaments,” the IHSA said in a release. “As a Board, we recognize certain trends and data within IHSA sports and activities that lead us to believe that some changes are necessary.”
