Mitchell’s late homer awakens Normal U-High, but Pioneers drop super-sectional in extras

MT. ZION — Normal U-High’s Myles Mitchell approached Tuesday’s Class 3A super-sectional game like his baseball career depended on it, because it did. 


The Pioneers boasted plenty of multi-sport stars on their team, some who will play baseball at the next level and others like Mitchell — a Heartland Community College signee in golf — will use their talents in other sports. 


Mitchell stepped up in the big moment and flipped Tuesday’s battle against Troy Triad on its head with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but Normal U-High fell 5-4 in eight innings after a late rally, a few close calls at the plate and a lot of heart left out on the field. 


“That's who this team is, that's what they've been doing all year long,” Shempf said. “They've never gave in, they played the game with pride, they played the game hard,.
