Diya Iyer came back from the experience of a lifetime nearly having lost her voice.

But the rising senior and multi-sport athlete at Washington is using that same voice to be a leader in her school after attending the NFHS National Student Leadership Summit. Iyer was one of four high school athletes from Illinois to attend the conference in Indianapolis from July 15-17.

“It really has brought me out of my shell and it’s funny because I've always been really outgoing [but] it's just developed me so much more as a leader,” Iyer said. “It's helped me just look at so many different perspectives.”

While it isn’t uncommon for high school seniors to take on increased leadership roles on sports teams and clubs, Iyer has been a leader since she was a freshman at Washington.
