Canton's Wenger, Morton's Gudeman win CSM Winter Athletes of the Week



After another mass of votes in the weekly poll, Canton's Ava Wenger and Morton's Wes Gudeman won CSM Winter Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 15-Jan. 21.


Both athletes helped their respective team stay in contention for a Mid-Illini Conference title and Wenger's Little Giants and Gudeman's Potters combined to go 5-0 last week. Voting ended at 6 PM on Wedesday. The full list of nominees and their accomplishments can be found here and more info about our winners can be found below.


Wenger won CSM Girls Athlete of the Week with 63 percent of the vote total. The five-foot-six senior guard helped Canton pick up three wins last week, two of them being in conference play. Wenger made nine 3-pointers combined in wins over Chicago Orr and East Peoria, scoring 20 and 17 points, respectively, in those games, more than double her eight points per game average. She currently leads the Little Giants with 48 3-pointers this season and counting, coming at a 41 percent clip.

What are your goals for the season? 

"To win regionals"


If you were stranded on an island with a teammate, who would you want it to be and why? 

"I would want Jena Goforth and Allison Wheeler to be there so we could spend all day playing board games."


Favorite food?

"Cheesy rice and tortillas from a Mexican restaurant"


I’d want concert tickets to see?

"Taylor Swift"


If I could have a superpower it would be?

"To read people's minds"


Who do you think is the greatest basketball player of all time? 

"Michael Jordan"


What’s been your favorite memory of the season so far? 

"My favorite memory of the season so far was when we stayed overnight in Rock Island."


Gudeman won CSM Boys Athlete of the Week with 37 percent of the vote total. His big week was highlighted by one of the best scoring performances of any player in the Peoria area this season, going for 37 points in Morton's 80-57 win over Niles North on last Saturday at the Redbird Roundball Classic. The night prior, Gudeman led the Potters with 22 in a 73-36 this season. The junior forward was responsible for a game-winning, buzzer-beater 3-pointer to claim victory over Washington, one of Morton's nine conference wins this season. Gudeman has helped the Potters achieve a current ranking of Class 3A No. 8 in the state AP Poll.

What are your goals for the season? 

"As a team, I just want to win, it's the little things that matter most to me. Winning the Mid-Illini Conference and making a deep run in March would be a goal. A personal one I've had from the start is scoring my 1,000th point this year too."


If you were stranded on an island with a teammate, who would you want it to be and why?

"I'd want to be stranded with Cal Boeker, the funniest guy I know and would make being stranded on an island fun. [He's] also a very smart guy and would be resourceful." 


Favorite food?

"Strawberry ice cream"


I’d want concert tickets to see?

"Zach Bryan or Taylor Swift"


If I could have a superpower it would be?

"Telekinesis"


Who do you think is the greatest basketball player of all time? 

"Michael Jordan, undisuputed GOAT"


Who’s your role model and why?

"My role model is my dad. I aspire to be as good of a person as he is and he's shown me what hard work and dedication truly are. I credit my basketball journey so far all to him and all he has done and sacrificed for me so I can succeed at doing what I love."


What’s been your favorite memory of the season so far? 

"Beating Metamora was a fun game, also hitting the game-winner against Washington was something I'll never forget."
