A month into the season, many of the top softball teams in the Central Illinois area are tightly bunched together with thin margins separating them.

The Mid-Illini is at the top of that list with five teams that are ranked in the latest Illinois Coaches Association rankings. The conference features seven teams at or above .500 as of April 13 with East Peoria, Dunlap, Washington, Pekin and Metamora all jockeying for position at the top.

While many games between those teams remain to be played, a contest between Brimfield/Elmwood and Illini Bluffs has decided who has the edge for now among two small-school powers. Several squads with potent hitting attacks round out the top five small schools in Clutch Sports Media’s first softball power rankings of the season.

Check out how the best softball teams in the Peoria and Bloomington/Normal area stack up below. Teams in the Mid-Illini and the Big 12 are part of the large school rankings while area schools from any other conference are in the small school rankings.
