East Peoria’s Sweatt balances softball with future in National Guard

EAST PEORIA — East Peoria’s Ashlyn Sweatt doesn’t have much free time these days.
The shortstop has helped key a strong start for the perennially competitive Raiders program, works four jobs and is spending her weekends getting ready for the next step of her life after graduation: the Illinois Army National Guard.
Sweatt’s first post-graduation plan was to go straight into playing college softball. She was coming off a solid junior campaign where she hit .371 with 43 hits, 22 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and was a second team all-Mid Illini Conference selection. She’s a four-year starter and is a two-time Greater Peoria Softball Coaches Association all-star.
But Sweatt wasn’t getting the college looks she was hoping for, leading her to consider doing something military-related.
