CHILLICOTHE — The scoreboard at IVC’s softball field had plenty of zeros on it on Tuesday night.

Sixteen of them, to be exact, were put up in a Class 2A sectional semifinal between Brimfield/Elmwood and Canton that showcased sublime pitching and several clutch defensive plays.

Brimfield/Elmwood’s freshman catcher Reese Legaspi would have no more of it.

With Kendyl Binder on first with two outs in the top of the ninth, Legaspi drilled a 1-0 pitch from Canton’s Tori Birch that crawled over the left field fence. Three outs later, the Indians clinched their first sectional title berth since 2018.

“I knew she was gonna give me an inside pitch and I was just gonna turn on it,” Legaspi said. “Biggest moment [of my career] for sure.”
