The Roundup, Nov. 24, 2025: Opening night of boys hoops features Nowaskie setting record, Intercity hoops and more

Monday marked the first games of the boys basketball season with Brimfield, Canton and Normal Community pulling out close wins. Princeville won on a heroic buzzer-beater while Normal U-High and Peoria Heights were also among the night’s winners. 


Sizable wins for IVC, Tremont and Midland led the way in girls hoops.

In boys basketball


Brimfield 53, Peoria Christian 22: Brimfield (1-0, 0-0 Inter-County) took on ICAC foe Peoria Christian (0-1, 0-0) at the Peoria Heights Thanksgiving Tournament and came away with an impressive win, highlighted by Connor Doe scoring his 1,000th career points in a 17-point, five-steal, four-assist outing. Tommy Burkitt led the Indians in scoring with 22 points to go with seven rebounds while ROWVA/Williamsfield transfer Dawson Traphagan (12 points, four assists) made an impact in his Brimfield debut. Griffin Hougham added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals in the win.


Canton 60, Havana 28: Canton (1-0, 0-0 Mid-Illini) got out to a roaring start at the Fulton County Tournament, more than doubling up Havana behind 15 points from Sivante Stokes. Lakon Otto added 11 points for the Little Giants and Easton Lusk contributed an extra 10. 


Dee-Mack 51, Roanoke-Benson 41: New head coach Chad Cluver won in his Dee-Mack debut with as the Chiefs (1-0, 0-0 Heart of Illinois) used a balanced effort to take down Roanoke-Benson. Coen Gilbert paced Dee-Mack with 16 and Shaun Denniston, Levi Keyser and Jerry Hahn all scored 10 points apiece. 


Elmwood 61, Kewanee Wethersfield 42: Twenty-four points from Garrett Webster, plus an extra 13 from Quinton Johns, helped Elmwood (1-0, 0-0 Inter-County) defeat Wethersfield at the Flying Geese’s Thanksgiving Tournament. 


Normal Community 67, Normal West 39: Normal Community (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) trailed 20-12 late in the first half to rival Normal West (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) in Intercity play, but went on a 41-9 run during a 12-minute stretch to dispatch the Wildcats. Trey Birditt shouldered the load with 17 points for the Ironmen while Chase Kasten scored 15 and Jarrel Brown tallied eight assists. Maliq Givens-Smith and Chase Sennett each provided 10 points for the Wildcats in the loss. 


Normal U-High 52, Bloomington 47: Normal U-High (1-0, 0-0 Central State Eight) moved past an improved Bloomington (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) squad in Intercity action as Cameron Johnson and Devin Fitzgerald lit up the scoreboard with 13 points apiece while Ezra Hensleigh added eight. 


Olympia 67, Hoopeston 54: School history was made for Olympia (1-0, 0-0 Sangamo) at the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Thanksgiving Tournament in a season-opening win. Dylan Nowaskie poured 44 points on the Cornjerkers to set a new school and tournament records for points in a game. 


Peoria Heights 60, Midland 54: Peoria Heights (1-0, 0-0 Inter-County) defended home court at the Peoria Heights Thanksgiving Tournament with a win to start the season over Midland (0-1, 0-0 Tri-County). DeAndre Marks made his mark with 18 points to lead the Patriots while freshman Tamarius Berry added 16. Game-high scoring honors, however, belonged to Dominic Rosa of Midland, who poured in 27. 


Princeville 57, Midwest Central 56: Princeville’s Jacob Bosch banked in a game-winning shot at the buzzer (1-0, 0-0 Lincoln Trail) to stun Midwest Central (0-1, 0-0 Tomahawk). Both teams had multiple players in double figures as Bosch and Brady Day had 13, Eli Christianson had 12 and Collin Lowery chipped in 11 for the Princes. Joe Proehl led the Raiders with 14 and he was closely followed by teammates Josh Dawe (13) and Malachi Carrol (12).

In girls basketball


Pontiac 39, Fieldcrest 33: Fieldcrest (3-2, 0-0 Heart of Illinois) dropped to one game over .500 on the season at the hands of Pontiac, who held a steady lead throughout the game. Pru Mangan scored 12 to lead the Knights and TeriLynn Timmerman was close behind with nine. 


Heyworth 49, Williamsville 33: Heyworth (4-0, 0-0 Heart of Illinois) held Williamsville with another strong defensive performance and stayed unbeaten as Karissa Cook (25 points, five rebounds, four steals) and Alia Riddle (11 points, five steals, four assists) paved the way. 


Midland 52, Henry-Senachwine 25: Several days after beating Henry-Senachwine 31-18, Midland (3-1, 0-0 Tri-County) picked up another win over its rival as Anna McGlasson poured in 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. 


IVC 70, Farmington 31: IVC (3-1, 0-0 Illini Prairie) blew out Farmington (1-3, 0-0 Prairieland) behind the lethal duo of Anna Foster (20 points, eight rebounds, five assists) and Kayt Miller (18 points, 13 rebounds). Alayah Nelton chipped in 11 points and Josie Gillespie logged 10 points in the big win. Lynsey Shriber led the Farmers in the scoring column with eight. 


Tremont 64, Brimfield 48: Tremont (4-1, 0-0 Heart of Illinois) received a double-double from Lilly Elston, whose 23 points and 11 rebounds powered the Turks to a win over Brimfield (1-3, 0-0 Inter-County). Audrey Updyke led the Indians with 14 points and Josie Wiewel (12 points) and Layni Linthicum (11 points, seven rebounds) also made big impacts in the loss for Brimfield. 


Roanoke-Benson, 58, Ottawa Marquette 34: A return to the lineup from Bri Harms proved pivotal in a win for Roanoke-Benson (3-2, 1-0 Tri-County) as the Rockets’ star put up 23 points and Livie Beltramea added 11 points.
