The ultimate range of emotions could be felt across the Central Illinois high school sports world on Saturday.
There was elation, particularly in the case of Eureka boys cross country, who won a Class 1A state title and was one of several area teams that finished the season admirably at Detweiller Park.
There was heartbreak, perhaps none more so than Washington boys’ soccer, whose dreams of winning a state title bounced off the crossbar in a penalty kick shootout to decide the Class 2A state championship game.
There were nail-biters, with six playoff football games being decided by one score as Dunlap, Peoria High and Farmington were victorious in such games. There was also pure dominance, shown by several athletes including Dunlap’s Jayden Schmick, Washington’s AJ Jones, Peoria High’s Breon Green and Washington swimmer Maya Happel, who led over a dozen area swimmers that qualified for state berths at sectional meets.
