In football:
Kankakee 7, Washington 3. In a game that featured the speedy Kays offense and Washington star running back Kainon McQueary, defense reigned supreme at Babcook Field. After a scoreless first half, both scoring plays occurred within 15 seconds of each other midway through the third quarter, starting with a field goal by Washington’s Devin Miller. On the ensuing kickoff, Kankakee’s Tony Phillips sprung back and forth, taking the kick 97 yards to the endzone for the game’s only touchdown. Both teams struggled again on offense after that point, with neither team hardly completing a pass. Following a key fourth down stop with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers converted on two clutch fourth downs to keep the drive alive. However, down on timeouts and time, they could not convert on a fourth-and-nine in Kankakee territory. Kankakee, the No. 4 team in the Class 6A AP poll, moves to 2-0 on the year while Washington (No. 7) falls to 1-1.
