Tri-Valley trifecta: Vikings volleyball wins first sectional in 17 years in thrilling three-setter

PONTIAC — There’s a saying that frequently gets brought up in the postseason.
‘It’s hard to beat a team three times.’
Hard? Yes. Impossible? No.
Tri-Valley volleyball proved that on Thursday as it clashed with Heart of Illinois Conference foe Eureka with their final matchup having the most stakes of any so far: a Class 2A sectional title.
Eureka, who fell to the Vikings in three sets during the regular season and in the HOIC Conference Tournament championship game, looked like it wouldn’t be denied a third time. The Hornets won the first set 25-22 and were one point away from securing a sweep on three separate occasions.
But the Vikings, perhaps inspired by the chants of “row, row, row” from their student section, kept on rowing and fought back from the brink of elimination each time to win a second set marathon 31-29 and never trailed in a 25-17 third set victory.
