Washington’s Nussbaum, Eureka’s Dare win CSM Spring Athletes of the Week

The latest CSM Spring Athletes of the Week were found along the Route 24 corridor as Washington’s Liam Nussbaum and Eureka’s Rylee Dare won the honors for the week of April 14-20. 


Nussbaum was an offensive weapon for Washington’s boys lacrosse team, which picked up a pair of wins and Dare lit it up in the batter’s box and in the circle for Eureka’s softball team, which has won seven of its last eight.

Nussbaum won CSM Boys Athlete of the Week after receiving 46 percent of the votes in the boys poll. The attacker for Washington’s boys lacrosse team scored six out of his team’s eight goals in an 8-4 win over Dunlap on April 15. He added two goals and an assist in a 5-3 loss to Tinley Park Andrew on April 16 and netted another pair of goals to go with three assists in a 16-9 win over Chicago St. Rita on April 19.

What’s been your favorite memory of the season so far?

“Beating Dunlap and scoring six goals against a local rival team.”


If you had to be stranded on an island with a teammate, who would it be and why?

“Landen Brown just because he's really smart and I trust him the most to get me off the island.”


Favorite music artist?

“Drake.”


Favorite food?

“Steak.”


Do you have any pregame routines/rituals?

“No.”


Who’s your favorite college or professional athlete?

“CJ Kirst, Cornell lacrosse.”


Do you have any hidden talents?

“I can juggle.”


Who’s your role model and why?

“My dad is my role model because he has a great work ethic and works really hard but still maintains a good balance in his life between work and other things like his family.”

Dare won CSM Girls Athlete of the Week after receiving 50 percent of the votes in the girls poll. The Hornets’ ace performed at a high level both with her bat and her arm, going 12-for-19 at the plate with eight RBIs in five games. Six of those hits were doubles with three of them coming in a 10-5 win over Putnam County on April 19. Dare went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in a 6-5 win over Lexington on April 16 and homered as part of a three-hit, three-RBI day in a 9-8 win over Fisher on April 14. She threw three complete game victories as well, striking out a combined 28 batters and only giving up one run to a strong Olympia team in a 3-1 victory on April 18.

What’s been your favorite memory of the season so far?

“My favorite memory was when me and several of my teammates did the ice bucket challenge and dumped 5 buckets of water on our heads.”


If you had to be stranded on an island with a teammate, who would it be and why?

“I would pick Addie Wherley because she is a very nice and fun person to be around. She makes everyone smile and there would never be a dull moment with her.”


Favorite music artist?

“My favorite artist is probably Megan Moroney or Jon Pardi.”


Favorite food?

“My favorite food is mac ‘n cheese.”


Do you have any pregame routines/rituals?

“We usually pray as a team and lock pinkies.”


Who’s your favorite college or professional athlete?

“Karlyn Pickens or NiJaree Canady.”


Do you have any hidden talents?

“I can juggle pretty well.”


Who’s your role model and why?

“My mom because she is strong and a hard worker.”
