Bloodied but not bowing out, Washington finishes sweep of Metamora: ‘A gritty one’

METAMORA — Not even blood could stop Jenna Flessner and the Washington softball team on Monday. 


Determined to finish a sweep of fellow area power and Mid-Illini rival Metamora for the first time in her career, the Panthers’ senior pitcher was cruising through a strong outing until hitting her thumb on her belt buckle while throwing a pitch in the fifth inning. 


Pitching the rest of the game with a type of medical glue on her thumb to prevent the bleeding, Flessner acted as the glue for the Panthers in the circle and at the plate as they finished a regular season sweep of the Redbirds with a 3-2 victory on Monday.
