Boys volleyball, girls flag football coming to Unit 5 high schools: “Gamechanger for our district”

NORMAL — Two of the nation’s fastest-growing sports are coming to Unit 5, beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
The addition of boys volleyball and girls flag football teams to Normal Community and Normal West high schools was approved at the district’s board meeting on Sept. 17.
The vote passed unanimously, with several board members citing the positive outcomes that come with having more opportunities to be in extracurricular and cocurricular activities.
“We have to remember the tangible outcomes for the benefit of the student beyond just the actual activity that they’re doing,” Unit 5 board member Patrick Mainieri said. “This does impact so many holistic things that we’re taking metrics on.”
