The Roundup, Sept. 16, 2025: Normal Community, Metamora, Morton among many multi-sport winners on busy Tuesday

Many teams were in action in conference play on Tuesday night with plenty of big games to go around. 


Limestone and Morton headlined winners in Mid-Illini volleyball while Normal West and Normal Community won in the Big 12. Tri-Valley, Midland and Illini Bluffs stayed hot with victories as well. 


Peoria Notre Dame and Normal Community squared off in a key Big 12 soccer match and Washington and Peoria Christian also won big contests on the pitch. 


Normal U-High won the Intercity boys golf title after its girls team did so earlier this year. Eureka, Pekin, Richwoods and Metemora were also among the day’s top-performing teams in golf. Morton boys and Pekin girls won the Mid-Illini Pre-Conference Meet in cross country and a trio of tennis teams earned victories.

In volleyball


Bloomington 2, Bloomington Cornerstone 0: Ella Cvetan’s 10-kill effort combined with two blocks from Logan Taylor to help the Purple Raiders (3-8, 1-0 Big 12) to a 25-18, 25-23 win against the Cyclones (1-9, 0-0 East Central Illinois) at Robert Frank Arena. Lauren Shuey added 24 assists while Karen Castro chipped in 10 digs. 


Eureka 2, Fieldcrest 0: Isabelle Axelson slammed 13 kills, Ellie Payne set 29 assists and Annika Schrock and Krissa Agnew combined for 21 kills to lead the Hornets (14-3, 4-0 Heart of Illinois) past the Knights (3-5-2, 1-3) in a 25-20, 25-13 Heart of Illinois Conference win. 


Limestone 2, Washington 1: Mia Lamberti had a 16-kill, 16-assist double-double, Bryn Williamson had an 11-kill, 11-assist double double and Khloe Stear had 27 digs to help the host Rockets (14-0, 3-0 Mid-Illini) catalog a 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 win against the Panthers (10-6, 1-2) in Mid-Illini Conference play. Kyla Fox added two blocks for Limestone. 


Macomb 2, Farmington 0: Farmington (3-7, 2-3 Prairieland) dropped a two-setter to Macomb 25-14, 25-18 as Ella Johnson had seven digs to lead the Farmers. Ava Essex (two aces) Kaitlynn McGee (five assists) and Kayleigh Toombs (three blocks) were three of five Farmers to have two kills.


Metamora 2, Canton 0: Eight kills apiece from Mia Stivers and Campbell Brown helped the Redbirds (10-5, 2-1 Mid-Illini) take a 25-14, 25-17 match from the host Little Giants (1-8, 0-3) in Mid-Illini play, with Ella Miller setting 20 assists and Junie Wagoner totaling six digs and three aces to round out the winning effort. 


Morton 2, Pekin 0: Morton (8-0, 3-0 Mid-Illini) remained undefeated after beating Pekin (4-6, 0-3) 25-12, 25-14 thanks to six kills from Isabelle Mueller and five digs from Ella Durbin. Alexa Sweazy had 10 assists for the Potters and Leigha Kempf was on fire from the service line with seven aces. Bella Sisk had five kills and two aces to lead Pekin in both categories while Mya Juenger had nine assists and Audrey Rivord had three digs. 


Normal West 2, Champaign Central 0: Ten digs from Ryan Temples, eight kills from Laine Thompson and nine assists and three aces from Allie Hernandez helped the Wildcats (7-7, 3-0 Big 12) claim a 25-15, 25-21 Big 12 Conference victory against the Maroons on their home floor. 


Olympia 2, Prairie Central 1: Grace Small sent home 17 kills to help the Spartans (7-7, 0-0 Sangamo) take a 25-22, 11-25, 25-23 win from the visiting Hawks in nonconference play. Olympia was also boosted by 23 assists from Kinley Steinkamp and 12 digs from Gabby Frye.


Peoria Christian 2, Lowpoint-Washburn 0: Eight kills from Mia Gerig, eight assists and two blocks from Sydney Hougham and Finley Edwards and five digs apiece from Hougham, Gerig and Audrey Sanders helped the Chargers (11-9, 0-0 Inter-County) take a 25-10, 25-23 nonconference win on the road.

In boys soccer


Bloomington 1, Urbana 1: Jhon Harrison scored the equalizer for the Purple Raiders (6-4-2, 1-2-1) with 4:32 left in the second half of a Big 12 Conference game to force a draw against the Tigers. 


Bloomington Central Catholic 8, Tolono Unity 0: Three goals from Jack Wyse, two goals from Connor Chalmers and additional scores from Mathew Carlock, Guiseppi Vetri and Isiah Bantista helped the Saints (3-6-1, 1-0 Illini Prairie) take an Illini Prairie Conference game from the host Rockets and break a five-game skid.


IVC 2, DePue 1: IVC (6-5-2, 0-1 Illini Prairie) got goals from Andrew Scheirer and Landon Sullivan to help escape with a narrow win over DePue. Sullivan and Logan Braun both added an assist and Dane Bramer had seven saves in net for the Grey Ghosts. 


Jacksonville 4, Normal U-High 1: A lone goal from Connor Evans wasn’t enough for Normal U-High (7-4-1, 2-1-1 Central State Eight) in a conference loss to Jacksonville.


Metamora 2, Canton 0: Jacob Crotz scored a pair of goals that were the difference-makers in a Metamora (3-3-3, 1-1-1 Mid-Illini) victory. Chase Driskell made eight saves for the Little Giants (3-6, 0-3).


Morton 9, Pekin 0: Morton (7-1-2, 2-0-1 Mid-Illini) rolled to a big win over Pekin (2-8, 0-3) thanks to hat tricks from Cole Whitaker and Alex McKie.


Normal Community 2, Peoria Notre Dame 2: Normal Community (5-2-2, 2-0-1 Big 12) received goals from Believe Avida and Logan Lelm to take a 2-0 lead in the first half before PND (5-3-2, 1-0-1) got two goals from Declan Schuler to force a draw. The second of Schuler’s goals came on a penalty kick and the Ironmen played the last 18 minutes of the game with 10 men.


Peoria Christian 7, Williamsville 0: Three goals in the first seven minutes helped lead Peoria Christian (9-3) to an emphatic win over a strong Williamsville side. Myles Zimmerman struck three times for the Chargers, Jacob Walton added two more and Samuel Loeb and Wrigley Kellerstrass each added one goal for PCS. 


Washington 5, Limestone 0: A hat trick from Hudson Scrivner and a brace from John Clift lifted Washington (10-0, 3-0 Mid-Illini) to a key conference win over Limestone (6-3-1, 1-2).

In boys golf


At Bartonville: Host Illini Bluffs edged past Tremont 171-180 at Coyote Creek Golf Course behind Crew Fortin’s 41 to lead the way. Jacob Dunn (42), Drew Dunn (43) and Christian Murphy (45) rounded out the Tigers’ clutch effort. Griffin Meeker’s 42 and Pierce Patterson’s 44 led the way for Tremont. 


At Eureka: Host Eureka won the Birdhouse Open at Kaufman Park Golf Course, with consistent play from Keegan Myers (36), Jacob Schulz (37), John Martin (37) and Cayden Fogo (37) helping the Hornets take the victory. Myers placed second to medalist Elijah Ackerman, who shot a 35 to lead Peoria Christian (149) to a narrow runner-up finish. Drew Gama (36) and Tait Miller (38) helped the Chargers, while El Paso-Gridley (164), Fieldcrest (164), Heyworth (166) and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (173) rounded out the field. 


At Lacon: Midland’s 171 was just enough to defeat Brimfield (174) and Newark (181) in a triangular at Timber Ridge Country Club. Tucker Bickerman’s 41 and Dominic Rosa’s 42 were difference-makers for the Timberwolves. Brimfield’s Chase Meinders was the medalist thanks to shooting a 39 and Grady Donnelli was among other Indians helping out with a 44. 


At Normal: Normal U-High’s collective score of 285 enabled the Pioneers to win the Intercity Tournament at Ironwood Golf Course, followed by Normal Community (319), Normal West (327), Bloomington (338), Bloomington Central Catholic (364) and Cornerstone (407). Brody Allen (68) was the medalist for the Pioneers, who boasted the top five overall finishers with Dawson Freeman (70), Jack Quinn (73) Michael Ocheltree (74) and Judah Dalton (75). Parker McDermott (76) led the Wildcats, Drew Stevens and Gavin Swartz (78) led the Ironmen, Sam Brown (80) led the Purple Raiders, Vaughn Oakey (83) led the Saints and Ty Zeller (81) led the Cyclones. 


At Washington: Medalist Colin Kemp’s blazing round of 33 helped lead Pekin (159) past East Peoria (167) and Canton (183) at Quail Meadows Golf Course, with Will Brown (40), Brady Neal (42) and Zane Clark (44) chipping into the Dragons’ winning effort. Nicholas Unes’ score of 39 led the Raiders, who also received strong rounds from R.J. Duncheon (41), Auggie Lohnes (43) and Vincent Silotto (44). Cam Wilcoxen led the Little Giants with a score of 39, while Brody Ketchum contributed a 46. 


In girls golf


At Canton: Pekin’s collective score of 180 was good enough to beat Canton (224) and East Peoria (245) at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club, with Leah Brown (40), Isla Clements (44), Jemma Gepford (47) and Khloe Donath (48) leading the Dragons’ winning charge. Elizabeth Knowles led Canton with a 45, with Josie DuBois’ score of 58 pacing the Raiders. 


At Mahomet: Tri-Valley was outshot by Mahomet-Seymour 167-185 at Lake of the Woods Golf Course as Lorelai Smith managed the best Vikings score with a 43.


At Peoria: Dunlap won a Mid-Illini triangular over Morton, who was four strokes behind the Eagles and Washington brought up the rear. Morgan Robinson fired a 38 to lead the Potters.


At Peoria: Richwoods used a 39 from Clara Gregg to headline a team total of 175, which was enough to beat Peoria Notre Dame (185) and Normal West (205) at Kellogg Golf Course’s executive course. Gloria Hayes’ 40 and Ava Taylor’s 46 were also key for the Knights. Josie Heffron carded a 43 and Bryn Coulter fired a 46 to lead the Irish but medalist honors belonged to Normal West’s Maddie Bierbaum, who shot a four-over 38.


At Metamora: Metamora’s 172 gave the Redbirds a 22-stroke win at Metamora Fields over Limestone (194) as the three best scores of the day — Gillian Tyra’s 39, Addie Mitchell’s 40 and Natalie Zimmerman’s 46 — all belonged to the Redbirds. Jaira Garlock and Baylie Huddleston each shot 46s to pace the Rockets.  


In boys cross country


At Athens: Olympia finished second to Auburn in a quad meet hosted at Athens as Ty Gale (18:39.96) and CJ Moore (18:40.40) took fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead the Spartans. 


At Downs: Lincoln handed Tri-Valley a 22-33 defeat in a dual at Baker Lake Park as the Vikings were led by Evan Brown (17:06.90).


At East Peoria: Morton won the Mid-Illini Pre-Conference Meet at Illinois Central College with 36 points, beating out Washington (49), Metamora (56), Dunlap (95), Pekin (131) and East Peoria (179). Washington’s Ben Gorsage won the race in 16:31.30, exactly 19 seconds ahead of Metamora’s Zach Born. Metamora’s Drew Hodel (16:56.30) and Washington’s Ethan Adams (16:58.80) crossed in third and fourth before Morton had five of the next six finishers, led by Maxwell Carter, Keyston Beyer and Duke Hendrick who all finished in 16:59, just milliseconds away from each other. Dunlap’s Jack Nester took 11th to lead the Eagles in 17:21.90, Grant Madero led Pekin in 18th in 17:39.90, Blake Schade paced Limestone by running a 17:55.10 to finish 22nd and East Peoria was led by Gage King in 43rd (18:52.70). 


At Peoria: IVC eked past Peoria Notre Dame 26-29 to win the Yeti Invite thanks largely to Aiden Duhs (18:06.3) and Cullan Fahrenkrug (18:06.9), who crossed first and second. PND’s Adam Ehrhart took third in 18:09.3. 


In girls cross country


At Athens: Olympia’s Mira Kistner ran a 21:25.99 to finish third at a quad meet hosted by Athens.


At Downs: Adelin Bruce of Tri-Valley won a dual meet against Lincoln, running a 17:24.55 to win that over 90 seconds ahead of the runner-up.  


At East Peoria: Pekin prevailed in the Mid-Illini Pre-Conference Meet at ICC with 28 points and five top-10 finishers, including winner Morgan Coker (19:49.70), McKinlee Williams (20:11.50, third) and Lauren Ladendorf (21:03.10, fifth). Washington (42), Dunlap (93), Morton (113), Metamora (129), Canton (167) and East Peoria (195) rounded out the team scores. Washington’s Sophia Ramirez (19:52.20) was the runner-up and teammate Caylie Ahten (20:17.20) took fourth. Brooklyn Virtue and Aubrey Ott crossed the line at 21:53 at nearly the exact same time for the Eagles and Morton’s Elise Parnham and Eden Beyer both ran a 22:15.50 to lead the Potters and tie for 20th. Mia Whitfield (21:10.10) slotted in eighth to lead Metamora, Canton’s Claire Fournier ran a 21:04.40 to take sixth and Brooklynn Webster (22:45.00) paced East Peoria in 32nd. Michaela Pilgrim (24:22.40) led Limestone’s individuals in 51st. 


At Peoria: IVC prevailed over PND 21-38 at the Irish’s Yeti Invite with the Irish’s Elizabeth Leustek running a 23:05 to win the race over IVC’s Jocelyn Forsythe (24:20) and Michaela Huhn (25:07). Peoria High’s Amari Williams nabbed a 10th-place finish after crossing the line in 30:15.


In girls tennis


Dunlap 9, Washington 0: Dunlap swept Washington thanks to singles wins from Anna Yu (6-0, 6-0), Alassea Michel (6-0, 6-1), Isabella Gusso (6-0, 6-0), Melaina Humbles (6-1, 6-0), Sia Verma (6-3, 6-1) and Sreshta Kallepalli (6-0, 6-4). The Eagles’ doubles teams also scored wins, including Gusso and Katherine Brewer (6-0, 6-4), Humbles and Neha Shanthappa (6-0, 6-0) and Rachel Mies and Sarah Syed (4-6, 6-2, 10-8).
