IHSA to adjust classification cutoffs, institute RPI-based seeding for boys and girls soccer

BLOOMINGTON — Postseason tinkering has become common at every level of sports in the last several years, including at the high school level in Illinois and more changes are on the way, the IHSA announced on Wednesday.
Two major changes that the IHSA Board of Directors approved at its Aug. 24 meeting were a revision to its classification cutoffs and the institution of a pilot program that uses MaxPreps RPI Rankings to seed teams for the boys and girls soccer playoffs.
The classification revisions are set to take effect in the 2027-28 season, while the RPI rankings for soccer will take effect immediately.
Several area teams could be impacted by the cutoff changes — including three Central Illinois teams that won state championships in the 2025-26 season — depending on what the school's enrollment figures are heading into 2027-28.
