PEORIA — Brien Dunphy looked out of a window at Peoria High School that overlooks Richmond Avenue.
He saw a soccer field and a track, along with a baseball and softball field, peeking out from behind a line of trees.
None of those facilities were there 15 years ago when Dunphy stepped in as the athletic director at the 169-year old high school, one of the oldest in the country west of the Allegheny Mountains.
He played a large role in constructing those facilities and many others, homes to Peoria High School athletes. Homes that some still come back to, even after they graduated.
After 15 years of service to Peoria High and even more spent in education as a teacher and coach, Dunphy is retiring as the school’s athletic director, but will always have a home at the one he helped create.
“There are very few one-time things in your life if you think about it: your marriage, your first day of work, your first day of school and your last day of school,” Dunphy said. “And I've been in school since I was about four.”
