PRINCEVILLE – Halfway through the fourth quarter of its Class 1A first round playoff game, Heyworth led Princeville 21-14 with the Princes having the ball deep in their own half.
The hosts needed to move the football 97 yards to either tie or win against a Heyworth defense that made many great plays earlier in the game and throughout the season. The Princes marched into Heyworth territory with some momentum, with the Hornets needing to make a big play.
They got one.
With 1:16 seconds left, Princeville quarterback Kaiden Sarnes threw a pass down the middle, but Heyworth’s Braydon Laesch picked the ball off in the red zone. The 5’10”, 175-pound double-threat happily downed the ball there, which eventually set up victory formation.
It’s a formation that Heyworth hadn’t lined up in during a playoff game since 2009.
