BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington girls basketball came into Thursday’s Class 3A Bloomington Regional final game with an 11-18 record and were facing the No. 1 seed Normal West Wildcats, a team they had lost to three times this season.
A familiar basketball adage this time of the year says it's hard to beat a team three times. The Purple Raiders proved its even harder to make it four as they put all the prior matchups in the past and pulled off the upset to bring the regional title back to Bloomington in a 44-39 victory.
The regional plaque is Bloomington’s first since 2009 where, coincidentally enough, it was below .500 in the regular season before making a postseason run.
“We weren’t even .500 and our team has just worked so hard for this,” Bloomington senior Lauren Shuey, who led the Purple Raiders with 15 points, said, “We lost to West three times and just came back to beat them, this title means everything to me and our team.”
