On Monday, Illinois State football has the opportunity to make history as the first Redbird’ football team to win an FCS national championship in program history.
The Redbirds have already made a little history, becoming the first team to reach an FCS championship game after winning all four of its playoff games to date on the road, including a 29-28 over FCS goliath North Dakota State and a 30-14 win over Villanova in the semifinals.
Illinois State’s playoff road trip has amassed over 8,100 miles through those four games. But some of their most key players in its journey to its first championship berth have come from Central Illinois’ own backyard.
The Redbirds will take on Montana State in the FCS Championship game on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at FirstBank Stadium on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Here’s a look at the 11 local players who have a chance to lift up one of the most coveted prizes in college football, players are listed in alphabetical order.
