Baseball can be so fun and so cruel at the same time. There are many examples of such cases recently in Central Illinois high school baseball.
We’ll start with the fun side. Several teams — namely Normal Community, East Peoria, Dunlap, Limestone, Richwoods, Illini Bluffs and Heyworth — have reeled off long win streaks at the perfect time late in the season. Six Class 1A and 2A squads (Heyworth, Illini Bluffs, IVC, Normal U-High, Peoria Notre Dame and Eureka) won regional titles over the weekend and all are legitimate threats to win a sectional title later this week.
Others, however, weren’t so lucky and suffered cruel fates. Brimfield/Elmwood and Tremont saw impressive campaigns end after seven innings of postseason baseball and Farmington’s winningest team in school history fell just short of hoisting any postseason hardware. The Mid-Illini, which featured five teams with 20 or more wins, cannot have more than two regional title winners, which will be determined in regional at Washington and East Peoria this week.
The final CSM Baseball Power Rankings of the season ranks the top five large school and top five small school teams in the Central Illinois area, most of which still have the possibility of becoming the first area team to reach the IHSA State Finals since Washington did so in 2022.
