‘Disadvantage’: Trio of Central Illinois lacrosse teams grapple with being barred from postseason

The expansion of the football postseason was the trending topic after the IHSA’s annual by-law referendum process in mid-December. But another one of the 12 by-laws that were voted on by member schools and passed will do the opposite for a niche, yet still growing, sport in Central Illinois.
The by-law in question will prevent co-op teams between schools that have a combined enrollment of over 3,500 from competing in the IHSA playoffs.
Co-op teams are not new or rare in Central Illinois. Elmwood and Brimfield co-op for football, baseball and softball, for example, as do many of the area’s swimming and diving teams.
But the new rules will affect all three of the area’s boys and girls lacrosse teams: Dunlap, Washington and Bloomington/Normal. Unless any of their co-ops are dissolved, all will be on the outside looking in for the postseason, beginning in the 2027 season.
