HERSCHER — When Dunlap baseball went out to Herscher on May 8, it was doing so as one of the state’s hottest teams.

The Eagles had won seven games in a row, including 21 of their last 22 games and were fresh off a Mid-Illini Conference sweep of Washington earlier in the week. They left rural Kankakee County with their winning streak snapped.

Herscher scored four runs in the fifth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Dunlap was not able to get anything going in the sixth inning and had a rally stymied in the seventh inning as the Tigers pulled off the win.

“Herscher is a solid team, and [Herscher] coach [Eric] Regez does a great job,” Dunlap head coach Eric Stone said. “He’s a hall-of-famer and their guys were ready to play. We weren’t able to bring it home and make the winning plays when we needed to.”
