Dunlap’s Peterson throws records out the window in rapid rise to one of nation’s best

DUNLAP — A lot has changed in a year for Dunlap thrower Patrick Peterson.
Last spring, Peterson was a freshman on Dunlap’s track and field team who regularly threw 40 to 46 feet in the shot put and 125 to 145 feet in the discus. Those marks were enough to net him routine top-10 showings, but few first-place finishes and were short of qualifying for state.
Peterson isn’t just dominating the Mid-Illini and Central Illinois now; he’s one of the nation’s top throwers in the shot put and the discus and is looking to be the second track and field state champion from Dunlap in school history.
For Peterson, his meteoric growth is more about building strong habits than it is about reaching specific distances.
“It's not really about expectation, it's mostly about consistency,” Peterson said. “What I've been working on in practice really just built up to what I can do, but it’s not about what I'm expecting or trying to hit a certain bar.
