DEKALB — Just one obstacle stood in the way of the Morton Potters and a state berth.
Figuratively, the Potters drove through a crowded lane in the playoffs and put up a floater that looked to be on track to go in, but the final defender deflected the shot.
Maple Park Kaneland’s 6-foot-9 center Jeffrey Hassan was that obstacle on Monday as his shot-blocking ability impacted the Potters all night and his layup with two seconds left sent them home in a 47-45 loss at the Class 3A Northern Illinois University Super-Sectional.
“It’s a very, very special group,” Morton head coach Abe Zeller said. “It hurts now, but we'll have a chance to gain some perspective and reflection and look back on a special year with a great group of guys. The journey was a lot of fun, we just came up a little short.”
