CHAMPAIGN — Was there ever a doubt?

The greater Peoria area had five wrestlers who reached state title bouts on Saturday. Few things can ever be a sure occurrence in the postseason, but Washington’s Wyatt Medlin winning a third straight state title seemed as close to it as possible.

The Panthers senior indeed delivered, beating New Lenox Providence Catholic’s Jasper Harper with a 19-3 tech fall to win the Class 2A state title at 165 pounds and finish off a perfect season at 43-0.

Medlin’s three state titles all came in different weight classes — 138, 157 and 165 — and makes him arguably the best to ever don a Washington singlet.

“It's kind of surreal just thinking I'm in the conversation of that,” Medlin said. “I don't think I am [the best Washington wrestler ever]. I think [it’s] Kannon Webster and Jacob Warner. It depends what I do at the collegiate level, they're doing spectacular things up there.”
