Olympia’s Collins fulfills prophecy, follows in father’s footsteps with state title

CHAMPAIGN — Winning a state wrestling title is special. Doing so as a freshman makes it even more impressive.


But doing so with your father has the head coach and wearing the same singlet he did when he won a state title in the early 2000s made for an unforgettable day for Olympia’s Connor Collins. 


The Spartans freshman became the fifth Olympia wrestler in program history to win a state championship as he won a 7-3 decision over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher’s Bentley Fields at 106 pounds.


After his arm was raised, Collins jumped into his dad’s arms for one of the biggest embraces that the State Farm Center floor saw on Saturday.
