CHATHAM — The Morton girls soccer team has a penchant for playing with its foot on the gas at all times.

That approach wore down Waterloo and helped green-light the Potters’ first trip to state in program history as they took down the Bulldogs 5-2 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon south of Springfield in the Class 2A Chatham Glenwood super-sectional.

“I just honestly couldn't believe it,” Morton’s Edie Hart said. “Everyone's like ‘we’re going to state’ and it just didn't feel real.”

“It's just kind of a whirlwind of emotions,” Morton head coach Zach Statham added. “I thought about how I would react if we got this far; I was pretty calm in the moment, but I think once I get kind of home and by myself, I’l have some more emotions.”

Tuesday’s win marked a breakthrough moment for the Potters. They’ve been one of the most dominant teams in the area over the last three years, going 63-7-2 in that span with three straight undefeated seasons in the Mid-Illini.

Now, a group with seven seniors and many more juniors gets to experience playing on the state’s biggest stage at North Central College in Naperville this weekend.
