Panthers’ bid for first-ever state volleyball berth falls short in close battle: ‘Played their hearts out’

WASHINGTON — Entering the postseason, Washington volleyball knew it had to flip a switch, and the Panthers did. 


After upsetting Limestone in the Class 3A regional finals, they knew they had to win twice more if they wanted to host a super-sectional match on their home floor, and they did. 


Playing against a tall, athletic New Lenox Providence Catholic team, Washington knew it would have to leave it all on the floor, and, once again, they did. 


But it wasn’t enough for the Panthers to make plans for the weekend at CEFCU Arena in Normal, as the Celtics were too good for Washington to handle and handed the hosts a 25-21, 25-18 defeat on Monday night at Torry Gym.
