Peoria High baseball finds purpose in persistence: ‘We know we can win’

PEORIA — Along Nebraska Avenue in Peoria sits a charming baseball diamond nestled snugly into the furthest corner of Peoria High’s athletic complex.
The dugouts, home plate and backstop are built into the adjoining hillside. Spectators sit in lawn chairs perched roughly 10 feet above the field, or take in the action standing on the edge of a local business’ parking lot.
The scoreboard in right center field, despite showing signs of wearing paint from the many sunsets it has seen, is functional. The pitcher’s mound and home plate area have been recently fitted with artificial turf.
The facilities are there. The athletic talent at Peoria High School is there. What’s not there for the school’s baseball team are wins. But that doesn't stop the Lions from showing up each day and taking on a challenge, or keep them from believing that success can be restored to the program.
