ROANOKE — When Ryan Davis led his first Roanoke-Benson girls basketball practice in 2024, he quickly learned that he would be building from the ground up. 


“I’m trying to run an offense,” said the former Germantown Hills Middle School head coach, who led his teams there to multiple state titles and even more state trips.


The brand of basketball he was used to didn’t exactly translate to the Rockets right away.


“Coach, we don’t understand,” the players on the team said in the first part of their response.


The Rockets weren’t necessarily a bottom-of-the-barrel program. They were only two years removed from a winning season and, despite not experiencing a wealth of success, were routinely able to win around 10 games a season. They also had Bri Harms, a junior at the time and a heavily-relied upon scoring option. 


Their philosophy? Give the ball to her and get out of the way.


The second part of their response shocked Davis.
