Clutch Sports Media Athletes of the Week

Central Illinois was filled with many more great performances by athletes who proved to be in true midseason form last week. 


This week’s Clutch Sports Media Spring Athlete of the Week nominees include two softball sluggers from the Heart of Illinois Conference, three track and field standouts, a pair of big-time bats in baseball and some of the area’s top talents in girls soccer and lacrosse plus boys tennis.

UPDATE: Tri-Valley's Maren Milton and Morton's Hudson Lovell won CSM Spring Athletes of the Week after receiving the most votes in their respective polls. Voting closed at 11:59 PM Saturday.


CSM Girls Athlete of the Week nominees 


Maggie Geuvens, Eureka softball


Geuvens was a doubles and RBI machine for Eureka and led the Hornets to five wins, including three in conference play. She went 10-15 with 13 RBIs, five doubles, a triple and a home run on the week combined, doubling in every game. She drove in four runs and homered in a 14-2 win over Tri-Valley on April 20, drove in three runs on three hits in a 15-0 win over El Paso-Gridley on April 22 and a 12-2 win over Heyworth on April 24. Geuvens also plated three teammates in a 17-0 win over Decatur St. Teresa on April 25. 


Karlee Pettit, Washington girls lacrosse


Pettit reached a big milestone on April 20, scoring the 150th goal and 200th point of her career. Her contributions helped Washington win 17-10 over Bloomington-Normal.


Claire Ceresa, Morton girls soccer


Ceresa has been busy helping the Potters extend a long win streak and scored goals in all three of Morton’s wins last week. Ceresa scored two goals in a 9-0 win over Limestone on April 21 and repeated the performance in a 4-0 win over Richwoods on April 24. She found the back of the net again in a 9-0 win over Champaign Central on April 23.


Maren Milton, Tri-Valley softball


Milton was a tough out in all four of Tri-Valley’s games last week, going a combined 12 for 16 with a pair of doubles, two triples, a home run and eight RBIs. Her week was highlighting by going 5 for 5 with a double and two RBIs in a 14-0 win over Fisher on April 22, as well as a 3-4 performance with a double, home run and three RBIs in a 10-6 win over Prairie Central on April 21. She went 3-4 again with a triple and two RBIs in a 9-8 win over Tremont on April 24.


Addie Lehman, Peoria Christian girls track and field


Lehman showed her versatility last week in several events and put up a top-10 pole vault mark in Illinois this season. The Chargers’ junior cleared 11 feet, 6 inches to win the Rockford Christian Invitational on April 25. At the Inter-County Conference Meet on April 24, she also finished second in the 100 meters, fifth in the high jump and led Peoria Christian’s 4x100 and 4x200 relays to podium finishes.


CSM Boys Athlete of the Week nominees


Kaeden Schatsiek, Brimfield/Elmwood baseball


Schatsiek helped Brimfield/Elmwood pile on a heap of runs in multiple wins, going a combined 12-18 with 13 RBIs, five doubles and two home runs. His biggest game came in a 14-3 win over ROWVA/Williamsfield on April 23 where he went 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs on top of striking out 10 in 3.2 innings on the mound. Schatsiek also homered in a 13-2 win over Annawan/Wethersfield the previous day, finishing with three RBIs, a feat that he matched in a 15-0 win over South Fulton on April 20.


Melvin Jenkins, Peoria High track and field


Jenkins was instrumental in Peoria High winning the Tony Thorsen Invitational at Dwight on April 21. The Lions’ senior won the 100 meters in 11.33 seconds, the 200 in 23.39 and led Peoria High’s 4x100 that clocked in at 43.70 to victory.


Hudson Lovell, Morton baseball


Lovell’s big bat helped lead Morton to four wins last week as he homered twice, drove in 10 runs and had five extra base hits. He went 2-3 with a homer and three RBIs in a 14-0 win over Pekin on April 20 and slayed the Dragon again with two triples and five RBIs in a 14-4 win on April 22. Lovell went yard and drove in a two in a 7-5 win over Mt. Zion on April 24 and went 2-3 with a double in a 9-0 win over East Moline United on April 25. 


Weston Lange, Metamora tennis


Lange was part of a big week for Metamora tennis, going unbeaten on the day at the Ottawa Invitational on April 25 to help the Redbirds win the tournament. He also won matches in a 9-0 win over Limestone and a 5-0 win over Pontiac in a doubleheader on April 21. 


Ethan Martin, Farmington boys track and field


Martin did nothing but win for a Farmington team that’s having a strong spring. The Farmers’ senior helped his team win the Bullet Invite at Knoxville on April 20 by anchoring their winning 4x100 (44.87) and 4x200 (1:34.78) relays. Martin led both relays to victory again on home turf at the Tuffy Bowen Invite on April 23 while also winning the 100 (11.76) and 200 (24.33).
