Intercity soccer in Bloomington-Normal was the highlight of Wednesday’s high school sports action in Central Illinois as Normal U-High came one step closer to winning the coveted trophy and Normal West bounced back with a big win. With Tuesday bringing more heat and humidity and various cancellations/postponements with it, the focus on volleyball became even bigger. The Roundup, August 21, 2024: Dunlap girls golfers among four Wednesday winners
Four Central Illinois golf teams came away with winner’s hardware on Wednesday as teams around the area continue to set baselines in the season’s early going. A majority of the area’s teams in action were either at the Metamora Redbird Classic on the girls side, or at the Raider Classic for the boys. Tuesday was another day full of high school golf in Central Illinois and like the state itself, Bloomington-Normal was at the center of it. Nearly two dozen boys golf teams descended on Weibring Golf Club for the annual Raider-Redbird Classic, where several local players shot in the low 70’s. After two and a half months, official competition returned to the IHSA on Thursday with boys and girls golf teams from around the area hitting the links. Illini Bluffs softball reached its fifth straight Class 1A state title game with a shutout win in the state semifinals on Friday, behind a great two-way performance from Cora Ellison. Peoria Notre Dame girls soccer was the victim of a heartbreaking late loss in its state semifinal and Metamora softball lost in the Washington Sectional title game in a similarly close fashion. Peoria Notre Dame girls soccer avenged a super-sectional loss from 2023 with a big win on Tuesday to advance to state, continuing a season where the Irish have set a program record for wins in a season. The Class 3A Washington Sectional semifinals in softball provided plenty of theatrics, with Metamora taking down rival Washington and East Peoria losing a wild finish on a walk-off.
