Normal Community’s Soney, Canton’s Haschemeyer win CSM Winter Athletes of the Week 



A pair of Central Illinois wrestlers added another title to their ledgers and earned CSM Winter Athletes of the Week honors after receiving the most votes in their respective polls. 


Normal Community’s Jackson Soney won CSM Boys Athlete of the Week after winning the 106-pound title at the Marty Williams Invite at Mahomet-Seymour while Canton’s Annalee Haschemeyer helped lead the Little Giants to a win at the Canton Invite by taking home the crown in the 110-pound bracket.

Soney won CSM Boys Athlete of the Week after receiving 63 percent of the votes in the boys poll. The Ironmen senior went 4-0 at Mahomet-Seymour’s Marty Williams Invite on Jan. 17, pinning Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley’s Julian Rodriquez and Fort Zumwalt North’s Dominick Ferranto before taking down Mahomet-Seymour’s Myles Hartzler in the semifinals. He then handled GCMS’ Bentley Fields in a 16-0 tech fall in the championship match. Soney also recently won the Big 12 Conference championship at 113 pounds on Jan. 24, helping Normal Community defend its team title as well.

What’s been your favorite memory of your high school career so far?

“My favorite memory has been spending time with my friends during overnight events.”


If you had to be stranded on an island with a teammate, who would it be and why?

“I would choose Ethan Cavallo, our 132-pounder, we share a lot of the same interests so we’d be able to talk about anything for hours.”


Favorite music artist?

“Senses Fail.”


Favorite food?

“A Gondola.”


Do you have any pregame routines/rituals?

“I take a small sip of water then I lightly slap my coaches hands.”


What’s one thing that’s on your bucket list?

“Beat all the Metal Gear Games.”


Who’s your role model and why?

“Khalil Rountree, because I really like the message he sends and how he believes anyone can do anything they put their hard work and mind to.”


Haschemeyer won CSM Girls Athlete of the Week after receiving 34 percent of the votes in the girls poll. The Canton sophomore was one of several winners on her team at the Canton Girls Invitational on Jan. 17 and went 3-0 to win the 110-pound bracket. Haschemeyer started out by pinning Jacksonville’s Leena Cavender before winning over Bloomington’s Autumn Starr in an 8-1 semifinal decision. She won the title over Erie-Prophetstown’s Rozlyn Mosher in a 9-5 decision after coming back from a 5-1 deficit. Haschmeyer currently carries a 26-3 record and won the Mid-Illini Conference title at 115 pounds on Jan. 24.
